Why IPTV buffers and stutters, and how to fix it
Buffering is, by a wide margin, IPTV problem number one. And most guides you will find say the same thing: “restart your router”. Sometimes it works, but usually the freeze has a specific cause you can identify in a couple of minutes.
This guide goes in order: from the most likely cause to the least. Follow the quick diagnosis and in most cases you will know where the problem is before you reach the middle of the article.
Quick diagnosis in 4 steps
- Does it stutter on all channels or only some? If only some, the problem is the provider's, not yours. Skip to point 5.
- Does it also happen on your phone over mobile data, off the Wi-Fi? If it is fine on mobile data, the problem is your local network. Go to point 1.
- Does it only happen at certain hours (8-11 pm)? That is congestion, yours or the provider's. Points 5 and 6.
- Does it fail only on the TV and not on the phone? It is the TV: weak Wi-Fi or no hardware decoding. Points 1 and 3.
1. Wi-Fi (by far the most frequent cause)
Before touching anything else, rule this out. Continuous streaming is especially sensitive to micro-dropouts: it does not need much speed, but it does need a stable connection. A 600 Mbps fibre line with interference performs worse than a clean 50 Mbps one.
- Try an Ethernet cable. It is the definitive test. If it is perfect over cable, you know the problem is the Wi-Fi and you can stop reading the other causes.
- Use the 5 GHz band instead of 2.4 GHz if the device is within 8-10 metres of the router. 2.4 GHz reaches further but is far more congested.
- Look at where the TV is. TVs usually have worse antennas than a phone and sit against the wall, often with a metal cabinet in front.
How much speed you really need

If you pay for 300 Mbps and it still freezes, the problem is not speed. It is stability, codec or provider.
2. The player's buffer is too low
The buffer is the number of seconds of video the player downloads ahead of time. If it is very short, any network micro-dropout becomes a visible pause. If it is long, it absorbs those bumps without you noticing.
Raise it in your player's settings if the freezes are short and intermittent. The price you pay: the channel takes slightly longer to start and zapping gets slower. Careful: if the problem is the codec or the connection limit, raising the buffer fixes absolutely nothing. That is why it pays to go in order.
3. The device does not decode HEVC in hardware
Many HD channels and practically all 4K ones broadcast in HEVC (H.265), a codec far more efficient than the older H.264. The key is that the device processes it with its dedicated chip rather than with the general-purpose CPU.
The symptoms are fairly recognisable:
- Old SD and HD channels play fine, but new HD and 4K channels choke.
- The device gets hot and the fan speeds up.
- The picture judders even though the network indicator is perfect.

4. You exceeded your provider's connection limit
This is the most confusing cause, because it does not look like a network problem. Almost every provider limits how many devices can play at the same time on one account: usually 1 or 2.
The tell-tale symptom: the channel loads for a second or two and then cuts out, or returns a 403 error outright. It usually happens when you left the app open on your phone, or on another TV in the house, and the server thinks you are still connected.
Fix: fully close the app on the other devices (leaving it in the background is not enough) and wait a minute for the server to release the session.
5. The provider's server is overloaded
If you got this far and the problem shows up only on certain channels or only during prime time, the cause is on the provider's side and there is nothing to adjust at home.
To confirm it: try the same channel at 3 pm and at 10 pm. If it is perfect in the afternoon and falls over at night, it is their server's congestion.
6. Your ISP throttles streaming
Some ISPs apply traffic management at peak hours. It is less common than people think, but it exists. The test: compare the same channel on Wi-Fi and on mobile data at the same time. If it is noticeably better on mobile data, it points to your ISP.
7. The stream format is not the best one
Many providers serve the same channel as HLS and as MPEG-TS. HLS is more robust on unstable networks because it splits the video into segments; MPEG-TS has lower latency but copes worse with bumps. If your player lets you switch, try the other format: on weak networks, HLS usually behaves better.
8. You have a VPN on
A VPN adds a network hop and latency. If you use one, turn it off for a moment to rule it out. Only in the specific case where your ISP throttles streaming can a VPN improve things instead of making them worse.
